Stuck in a Loop (Alright + Calling 911 + Mess)
Hello friends! It's Frequency Creature here and I'm here to give you a little bit about my second album with Mebo.
After the big success of Deepest Lie and the first album we were definitely hungry for another taste of success so we immediately got started on a second album (I think we've even mentioned a fifth album casually but we are definitely thinking about a third album). I've been spending my days travelling round the UK for university so I've been having a chance to feel very inspired and also had a decent amount of time to reflect on the mistakes of the last album. It's probably quite obvious that the album this time is much louder and much more saturated because the songs were definitely not standing out in all the playlists.
We made a bunch of demos like always and sadly we had to reduce it down to just nine again but one of the songs called "Nostalgia" I think we are planning to re-record for another release.
Anyway I will write down for you a list of the tracks from worst-best so that you know which ones to listen to (and I guess which ones not to as well).
9. Wind
I'm sorry wind but you are my least favourite. Despite being a really good demo and as much as I tried to give it a unique REM type feel with all the interesting sampled instruments that I put in I think you ended up sounding a bit too dense. Sorry :(
8. Tell Me Why
This one should also have been better but I think the interesting phased solo saves it from being bottom. It probably would have been better left as an acoustic solo but it does have an interesting Amnesiac type sound that is spooky even if it is quite forgettable.
7. Death May Die
Maybe a bit too repetitive but you can't say that this song doesn't send chills down your spine when you hear it. I originally tried to put a vocoder on the vocals but I have to agree with Mebo that it sounds better like this. The snare is loud and punchy and the guitars are pretty haunting. Probably should have saved this for halloween. One of the other demos "Suicidal Letter" has a very similar sound to this.
6. Final War
A great closer of a track with some heavy guitar and a blend of light piano and a random sprinkle of saxophone at the end what is there not to like about the track. I think I spent 50% of my time on that very small guitar solo after the first chorus trying to get it to sound like Black Hole Sun. The song also reminds me a bit of New Order and Supertramp for some reason.
5. Dude / Stuck in a Loop
Kurt Cobain would be proud I'm sure. I love the switch of the drums between the chorus and verse even though yes I came up with them. The song is filled with one of those solos that you want to sing along to like Brian May's. I wanted the song to be much more saturated than it actually turned out to be but you cannot deny this is the sound of the end of the world. Sorry if the synth at the start is a bit cheesy but I think it gives it a 90s feel.
4. Fire and Flame
Riding out into the desert with a drum machine and acoustic guitar it is definitely the track the most fitting to be put into a road trip type movie. Although I like all of the other songs this is probably the most uplifting and positive song and probably the best song to listen to on repeat mental health wise. The solo is also one of the best we have had since deepest lie.
3. Alright
The first of the singles I've been listening to this one on repeat all day because it's promotion time!!! Alright is definitely the most grungy that I have managed to make a song sound ever so I am really proud of that. Also the transition from the radio effect to the normal vocals is one of the strongest points on this whole album. The lyrics are also on point here well done Mr Mebo.
2. Mess
Along with Nostalgia this was the first in the pile of demos ready for the album so it definitely feels like the oldest song if that means anything. Televangeles did a mix of this just to push it further into single territory and help it reach the audience that it deserves. The combination of all the layers of the vocals plus the unique chord progression make this song one of my favourites.
1. Calling 911
In the history books this may be what people remember us for (in the unlikely event we ever enter the history books). We were messing around going through a bunch of tracks in our hard drives and seeing what the other thought. Then all of a sudden this one comes out and I'm like -----what!!!. I definitely pushed for the psychedelic, downtempo "stan" type sound and along with the combination of the insanely deep lyrics from mebo this is probably the most haunting track. Also there are very quiet rain sounds if you listen extremely carefully near the start.
Anyway can't wait to hear what you think of it - please let me know i rarely get much through my inboxes (even if you only have a negative review - but try to make it constructive).
Kind Regards
Frecre
Fun Fact: This is the longest I've spent between doing the final render and releasing the tracks --- 2 months!
