I am very excited to share my first EP with you called 'Supernova Love' which was written by Saudi Arabian artist Mebo and produced by myself. I met Mebo in November last year after hearing his second album 'Stuck on the ground' we tried experimenting and seeing whether we could work together. We gave up and I didn't really hear from Mebo again until July when we considered working together again.

Mebo made a huge number of demos for the EP but I picked out a couple that I liked and started working on. At this point I have to say the original plan was a full album but I think I found producing very stressful so I decided to reduce it down to 6 tracks (and then finally down to 5). The main problem we found quite quickly is that Mebo wanted something more organic than we had in the original demos than I could literally make within the limits of my equipment.

The good news is we eventually found a sound we liked and after a very very large number of reworks we managed to make something we felt was worth releasing to the big wide world.

Some songs that were not included in the final release but might appear in mebo's future discography include:

  • Rome
  • Loneliness
  • Alpha Centauri
  • Everybody Wants that Man
  • I Can't Stand
  • 144/1234 (reprise); a short 50 second reprise of the track 144/1234

Track One: Beneath the Ocean

Rather paradoxically this was the very last track that we wrote for the EP. Mebo wrote this and Supernova Love after the other demos which is why it sounds rather different. I would say this is my second favourite track from the album. Also the helicopter sound is actually a wave sound effect with heavy tremolo but I kept it in as I thought it linked to the theme of travel present within the work.

Track Two: Smile

Smile is meant to be a fun dreamy track that just repeats the same lyrics over and over:

The way she smiles on my way it's like a daisy
It took my heart far away you know it's crazy
I'm so in pain by the way make it easy
I'm so obsessed with the way she me baby
Oh I'll be here
I'll be here
With my little dear
Little dear
Oh I'll be here
I'll be here
With my little dear
Little dear

It was one of my choices that I included from the original demos. The fact the lyrics repeat means I saved a lot of filespace on backing vocals.

Track Three: Supernova Love

I think most that I have talked to say that this is the best track on the EP. This track took such a long time that this was almost not going to be included in the final piece of work. The chords changed in the chorus twice, the radio effect got taken out multiple times, the drums changed completely almost on every single version. However I think it is the track I am most proud of.

This is also where the title for the EP comes from.

Track Four: 144/1234

I was told that I needed to help bring a sense of unplugged nirvana to this track. The track is mostly a mixture of thick vocal layering, strings, cello, bass, subtle drums and acoustic guitar. I also made a reprise of the track but then I decided that since the EP had become so short that it would not make any sense.

Track Five: In the Front

A very short track at only 88 seconds this was left as a nice short and sweet ending for the EP. I remember the original plan was to make something a bit more mumford and sons but I really don't know what genre this ended up being.

Fun Fact

This was the first time that I have made a whole record where I was not the songwriter on any track.
